A blog about crafting, cooking, reading, family, and enjoying all this life has in store!

WIP Wednesday…

I am still working away on the girls summer wardrobes.  At the moment I am working on an Early Girl Dress and I am in love with this pattern!  I purchased this pattern at least two years ago and never made it.  This was before I really got to understand the differences in yarn materials and knew that a dress crocheted in acrylic would be much too hot for my daughters in our sweltering, southern heat.  Thanks to Ravelry, I now know that there are a multitude of fibers out there that are perfectly suited for wearables for the Gulf Coast Summer.  I am currently playing with Knit Picks Cotlin and I have to say, it has quickly become a favorite work horse for me.  It creates a nice fabric, is cool enough, and best of all, machine washable!  My 4 year old has decided that right now her favorite color is pink, so here is her Early Girl Dress so far…

Such a nice, soft color

Its a bit overcast, so the picture isn’t doing the color total justice.  I am hoping to have this and another one of these done in time for them to wear them on Easter, but I know they will become favorites for the warmer months ahead!

Hope you have a happy, hectic, handmade day!

Weekend Wrap-Up…

We had a great weekend in the happy, hectic, home!

Saturday the girls granny came over in the morning and my sister in law came over in the afternoon with her two boys.  The girls had a great time playing with their cousins and the weather was nice so we got to go outside for a bit.

Sunday was my day to try to get caught up on housework but it seems a never ending cycle.  I have actually purged about half of the girls toys and I am thinking that we are in need of one more round of purging.  It seems things are getting pulled out of the toy bins, but just tossed on the floor, not actually played with, in favor of playing with a few favorites.  Less things mean an easier time finding things for the girls and an easier time with clutter for mom and dad!  I got a bit done, but thanks to allergies having me a little under the weather, not as much as I needed to.

I did spend my down time rather productively and finished up my older daughter’s sundress.  She loved it!

She loves her new dress!

I have gotten a start on the next dress and should have some good progress to post later in the week.

I also placed an order for some fabric to make some more things for the girls summer wardrobes!  I should have them completely outfitted before long and half will be handmade by mama!  This is my first year of actively trying to make most of their things and summer seemed like a good time to get a start since our summers are so long around here!  This has however put me a bit behind on other things I was working on, but the clothes need to be done before the warm weather hits.  I am planning to make myself a check list to see what’s what.  Can’t wait to be able to share more of the wardrobe with you!

As always, I hope you all have a happy, hectic, handmade day!

First finish of 2015…

I was off to a bit of a slow start this year, with RL stuff.  I lost my crafting mojo and could not figure out what was going on.  As I was working on a sweater I was knitting one evening, it hit me.  I wasn’t enjoying what I was doing.  There is nothing less fulfilling than working on your hobby, only to find that you are dreading picking it up each night.  I began to think about what exactly was causing me to not enjoy what I was doing and the realization came to me.  I am, at heart, a crocheter.  I do enjoy knitting, and I’m glad that I took the time to learn, but limiting myself to exclusively knitting was becoming tedious to me.  I love my hand knit socks, and have enough sock yarn in my stash to knit over 20 pair, so I don’t intend to stop knitting them.  Everything else though, I know now, that I will mostly stick to crochet, with a few limited exceptions of projects I know I want to make.

Once I sorted all of this out in my mind, my whole focus changed.  Not only on my yarn crafting, but on crafting in general.  I have bogged myself down with so many different crafts that I want to do, or plan to learn, that I don’t have time for the ones that I truly love.  Now that spring is soon approaching in my neck of the woods, I plan to do a major overhaul of my crafting supplies.  The things that I have purchased and ended up not enjoying just need to go.  I keep hanging on hoping I will someday get the urge, but all I have is a massively cluttered closet.  I have been working tirelessly on purging and streamlining the girls toys, so I need to do the same for myself.  I have already begun by returning a ton of yarn that had been purchased with knitting projects in mind.  I was able to exchange it for yarn to make some cute crochet things that I can’t wait to get started on.  I will be making quite a few things for the girls spring/summer wardrobes, not to mention baby things once I find out the sex.

Another crochet love I am rediscovering is doily making.  There is just something so wonderful about using the tiny hook with thread to make something so beautiful.  I was recently gifted a box of crochet thread from a dear friend and my hook has been flying working on a gorgeous doily.

The last thing I have treated myself to is a book on learning to sew.  I have wanted to learn for years and for a multitude of reasons (excuses) on my part have never done it.  Well, now is the time.  When I receive the book, I plan to start working through the projects right away.  I can’t wait!

My hook is flying, and my brain is constantly churning with ideas and things I want to make, so it was no surprise when I created this gorgeous dress in just a matter of days…

The pattern, Girls Tiered Sundress by Sara Lora of Ball, Hank, and Skein, was a dream to work.  I have already started ona  second one for my other daughter.

So, tell me readers, what crafty changes are you making this year?  I’d love to hear in the comments!

Have a happy, hectic, handmade day!
