Pine Ridge Reservation

on July 10, 2013

Someone asked in the comments yesterday about Pine Ridge Reservation.  Since this is the charity that has taken a hold of my heart I thought that it deserved its own post instead of just a response to a comment.

First, I’m just going to give you some of the facts.  Pine Ridge Reservation is located in South Dakota.  It is an Oglala Lakota Native American Reservation.  It encompasses 3,468.86 square miles of land.  The conditions on the reservation are horrible for most residents.  Basics like running water, heat and food are scarce for most residents let alone jobs and health care, mainly due to the geographical isolation and harsh climate on the reservation.  It is the poorest area in the U.S., with an 80% unemployment rate and a per capita income of $6286.  Due to the health conditions, which are commonly found in 3rd World Countries, the average life expectancy for males is 48 and females 52.  There is a 5% higher infant mortality rate.  The teen suicide rate is four times the national average.

The charities I am working to help try to provide a little help with their crochet and knitted items.  I belong to three groups on Ravelry that are dedicated to sending items to those in need at Pine Ridge.

Afghans for Pine Ridge knits and crochets blanket squares to be sent to Pam, a Lakota woman, to be assembled into blankets, which are sent to the residents of the reservation.

For the Children of Pine Ridge knits and crochets warm items for the children living on the reservation and also some home items for the residents.

Bundles of Joy (the group I am most active with) knits and crochets items to be sent to the OB Ward at Pine Ridge for the babies born each month.  They also periodically do collections of items for the Pre School children and the Elderly.

I know that any of these groups loves to have new members and can use all the handmade items that people are willing to send.  If you are interested in helping out with the charity, pop on in and visit these friendly groups on Ravelry!  Thank you for reading this post, because I think the more people that we can teach about life on the reservation, the more people we can get to help!

Have a happy, hectic, handmade day!

Oh–I am all too familiar with the conditions you described as they are eerily very similar to the conditions where my daughter and her little family live and work, in Eastern Washington on the Yakama Reservation. It is truly heartbreaking –and when I go visit and tag along with them, it is the children which break my heart in half. The life expectancy is about the same –with the added statistic of 95% of the teens being essentially homeless. I would garner a guess that 90% of the American people are blissfully ignorant of this extreme poverty, happening in our own country, and in the more desolate and god forsaken chunks of land. Bless you for what you are doing…..

    • I can just never get over the fact that all this is happening right here, when most people think that it is things that happen only in other countries. I am hoping to help get the word out so we can help to make changes for these people.
